Brothers Before Others Honors Baltimore County PD Amy Sorrells Caprio

On May 21st, 2018, Baltimore County Police Officer First Class Amy Sorrells Caprio was tragically killed in the line of duty. On June 23rd, 2018, members of Brothers Before Others traveled to Baltimore, Maryland, in order to pay tribute to her and to honor the sacrifice she made, as well as the sacrifices that will forever be made by her family.

While in Baltimore, BBO hosted a lunch for members of both the Sorrells and the Caprio family, including Amy’s parents, as well as her husband, Tim, and his parents. Also at the gathering was Amy’s cousin, Baltimore County Police Corporal and Emerald Society of Baltimore President Eric Brennan, who not only worked at the 8th Precinct with Amy, but is also her cousin. In fact, while at the lunch, Tim pointed out that Amy had always credited Eric as being the inspiration for her wanting to be police officer.

On behalf of the group, the members of BBO who traveled from as far as Ohio and Florida, presented Tim and his family(s) with several personalized and individual gifts, gathered in Amy’s honor.

Included in those gifts, was a portrait of Amy done by BBO Member/Partner, Philadelphia Police Officer and forensic sketch artist, Jonny Castro. Jonny has been creating line of duty death portraits since 2016, marking the one year anniversary of the line of duty death of Philadelphia Police Officer Robert Wilson III. Since then, Jonny has completed hundreds of portraits, which he does on his own time and pays for out of his own pocket.

In this case, Jonny was able to attend the lunch and present the canvas portrait to Tim, as well as photo prints to Amy and Tim’s parents.

Following the lunch, the group traveled to the 8th Precinct, where they were met by members of Amy’s squad and her squad commander. Jonny was able to present a framed photo print of his portrait to the precinct, to accompany the tribute shirts, hats and flag donated by our members.

While photos were being taken outside, Tom Scheve of TCS Woodworking located in Baltimore, MD, walked up to the group, unsolicited, and presented the families with a gorgeous piece that he had been working on since Amy’s death. As he humbly thanked the group for “watching over him and his family”, Tom was a shining example that, when you may think no one out there cares and that no one is thinking about you, there are, in fact, good people who see the work being done by the American police officer.

As Brothers Before Others grows and continues to define itself, taking the opportunity to visit with the families of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice is becoming a staple of what we do. We are both humbled and grateful that the families of our fallen allow us to do this. Without them letting us into their lives in this way, none of this would be possible.

We are thankful to the members of the Sorrells and Carpio families, as well as the members of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge#4 for their invitation and their attendance.
