Early on in 2018, the Detroit Police Department suffered two tragic losses.
On January 28th, 2018, Police Officer Glenn Doss, Jr, who’s father Glenn Doss, Sr is also a Detroit Police Officer, succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained as he responded to a report of domestic violence in progress.
A short time later, on February 13th, 2018, Detroit Police Officer Darren Weathers was killed in an on-duty motor vehicle accident.
Members of Brothers Before Others, in conjunction with Jonny Castro art, put together a road trip for the sole purpose of honoring these two heroes and their families. Jonny created an individual portrait of each officer while BBO created one of a kind items dedicated to the memory of both Officers Doss Jr and Weathers. Included in these items were Flags of the United States of America that had been flown, individually, over the World Trade Center site by the Port Authority Police Department Special Services Unit headed by Sgt Craig Hoo. Each flag was accompanied by a certificate, signed by the Superintendent of Police, indicating the memory of each officer.
A little over a week after Officer Weathers had passed, members of BBO’s Board and Administration then set out for Michigan. That weekend, BBO hosted members of both families at Kid Rock’s ‘Made in Detroit’ Restaurant for a private lunch in order to present the items. BBO then visited the precincts that both officers were individually assigned to in order to drop off shirts, hats and sweatshirts designed in Officer Doss’ and Weathers’ memory.
Following the lunch with the families and visits to the precincts, members of the Detroit Police Department, many who are also members of BBO, had organized a fundraiser benefit for the families of both officers. Events like these are made possible only through the intrinsic motivation of our partners, the heartfelt generosity of our members and the support of all of our sponsors. Thank you’s will never be enough.
